The Skinny on Fats

83.15 Billion dollars a year! That’s the yearly revenue of the global fitness industry. It seems that everyone is willing to pay ungodly amounts of their hard earned cash to get just a little closer to that model image of the super-fit guy with bulging muscles on the cover of that magazine. Or, ladies, that picture of the lean, toned and sexy Instagram model that we just saved as our wallpaper to give us that extra nudge of motivation when we can’t decide between the chicken strips or the salad.

If the old adage is true that you are what you eat, it makes sense that we would take extreme measures to avoid all fat. For the longest time, even health professionals advised that eating fat would make you fat. Now we take a different approach.

There are GOOD fats that you can enjoy without sabotaging your weight loss progress!

  • Avocados
  • Cheese
  • Dark Chocolate
  • Whole Eggs
  • Fatty Fish
  • Nuts
  • Chia Seeds
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Coconut Oil
  • Full Fat Yogurt

But it’s fat! How can it be healthy?!

Healthy fats actually improve metabolism, balance hormones, and eliminate those sabotaging cravings. Healthy fats, like Omega-3, can actually improve brain and body function. Your brain is made up of billions of neurons and each and every one of them is surrounded by a sheath made of water, protein, and mostly FAT! These essential fats play a huge role in protecting yourself against depression and anxiety.

Bottom line: Your body NEEDS fat to function optimally. Mentally, physically, and emotionally; every aspect of your wellbeing is influenced by your fat consumption. Here at the Institute for Functional Health, we can help you determine exactly what your body needs to help you feel and look your best!
